Pete Chen Goes Wire-to-Wire to Win First WPT Beijing for $299k

Taiwan’s Pete Chen was the ultimate victor in the World Poker Tour’s first-ever Main Event held in Beijing.

Chen outlasted 400 entries and outlasted a final table that included noted pro Bryan Huang to scoop a $299k haul and a ticket into the $15,000 WPT Tournament of Champions next year.

The Taiwanese native now has over $1m in lifetime live tournament earnings, the majority of which are from Macau, but he has made trips to play in LA and Las Vegas so the TOC trip shouldn’t be too difficult.

WPT Beijing was also the very first tournament for Season 16 so Chen grabbed an early lead in the Player of the Year race.

Haung Hits Rail in Sixth

Long-time poker pro Bryan Huang, who dominated a huge portion of WPT Beijing, was surprisingly the first player to be eliminated from the six-player final table.

bryan huang

Huang started the table with short stack of 16 big blinds so he was actively shoving from the start of play.

Unfortunately for Huang he shoved pocket deuces into Zhang Wenbin’s pocket jacks and that was it for the Singaporean pro. Huang added $54k to his $1.1 million in lifetime live tournament earnings.

Beijing was a unique event for the WPT because a portion of the field were Chinese locals who qualified through Ourgame’s social poker game while the rest were made up of international players who bought in directly.

Next up for the WPT is a high-profile stop in Amsterdam starting on May 5.

The WPT has teamed up with PokerStars a promotion they’re calling “The MonteDam Swing” where players who take part in both WPT Amsterdam and PokerStars Championship Monte Carlo have a chance to win some extra cash.

Here are the complete final-table payouts (*First place also includes $15k TOC seat) for WPT Beijing:

1st place: Pete Yanhan Chen – CNY 2,063,454* (US $299,485*)
2nd place: Chen Ke – CNY 1,373,026 (US $199,278)
3rd place: Lu Yingqi – CNY 882,619 (US $128,101)
4th place: Zhang Wenben – CNY 585,468 (US $84,974)
5th place: Tan Yancheng – CNY 450,616 (US $65,401)
6th place: Bryan Huang – CNY 373,218 (US $54,168)

Weinman Clips Mizrachi to Win 2017 WPT TOC for $381,500

Mizchael “The Grinder” Mizrachi has a knack for making the World Poker Tour Tournament of Champions final table.

Perhaps next year he’ll finally close one out.

Atlanta grinder Daniel Weinman narrowly bested Mizrachi heads-up to become this year’s champion of champions for $381,500. Mizrachi finished third in the 2016 edition of the tournament.

It’s been a whirlwind 2017 for Weinman as he won his first-ever WPT title for $892,433 in February.

“It’s crazy going from just grinding circuit tournaments, playing and then occasionally playing one of these big buy-in events,” he said.

“You’re just hoping to min cash or go somewhat deep. To have a $900k score in February and follow it up with this… It’s incredible.”

Weinman was dominant at the final table and spent the majority of the time as the chip leader.

Seidel Crashes Out in Fifth

Erik Seidel was by far the biggest winner at the TOC final table with a ludicrous $31.6m in lifetime live tournament earnings and eight WSOP bracelets but he was unusually quiet this time around.

Erik Seidel IMG 3213

Another score for Sly.

After failing to get much going, Seidel finally made a stand with A 5 only to get snapped off by Daniel Santoro with K J.

Santoro paired his jack on the flop and that was more than enough to send Seidel packing in fifth. Seidel added another $73,575 to his incredible life-time haul.

It was an extra special victory for Weinman who is a huge fan of Sergio Garcia, who won the 2017 Masters earlier in the evening.

“It’s crazy I barely even knew that Sergio won,” he said.

“This is kinda better than being at Augusta though.”

Weinman Wins New Audi

For his efforts Weinman also received a brand-new 2018 S5 that was thrown in by WPT sponsor Audi. The free car was extra sweet for Weinman his rail was heckling him the entire night about his current vehicle.

Michael Mizrachi IMG 3371

Michael Mizrachi

“I got a Kia Sportage, the old soccer mom car,” he said.

“I got it because it was easy to tow the golf clubs around. I think the Audi will be a nice little upgrade for me.”

In total 66 Champion’s Club winners competed in this year’s edition of the TOC. WPT president Adam Pliska is confident the TOC will return for 2018.

Here are the complete final-table payouts:

1. Daniel Weinman - $381,500 + $15,000 Seat in 2018 TOC
2. Michael Mizrachi - $218,000
3. Daniel Santoro - $133,525
4. David Ormsby - $95,375
5. Erik Seidel - $73,575
6. Dylan Wilkerson - $57,225

Michael Mizrachi, Erik Seidel Headline 2017 WPT TOC Final Table

For the second straight year Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi has a shot at closing out the World Poker Tournament of Champions in his home state of Florida.

Daniel Weinman snagged the final-table chip lead with 872,000 but Mizrachi is nipping at his heels with 699,000.

Both players will have to deal with long-time poker vet Erik Seidel who finished with 540,000 chips and will no doubt be looking to add yet another accolade to his illustrious career.

The final table is rounded out by Seattle’s Dylan Wilkerson ((641,000 chips), Canadian David Ormsby (299,000) and New York’s Daniel Santoro (250,000).

Jesse Sylvia, Jonathan Jaffe Make the Money

Last year Mizrachi also entered the TOC final table second in chips but ended up bowing out in third place for $140,000.

Erik Seidel IMG 3156

Erik Seidel is always a threat.

The Grinder, who was the Day 1 chip leader of this tournament, will certainly be gunning for first in this year’s competition, which pays out $381,500 in addition to a brand-new 2018 Audi S5.

By winning the TOC, Mizrachi would also pass $5m in total WPT earnings.

Meanwhile Erik Seidel, who sits with a staggering $31.6 million in all-time live tournament earnings) is currently second to Daniel Negreanu but could close the gap to just shy of a million by taking down the TOC.

Interestingly Daniel Weinman is the only Champion’s Club member at the final table that came from the most recent season of the WPT.

Stefan Schillhabel, Jesse Sylvia and Jonathan Jaffe didn’t make the final table but they did make the money by placing seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.

The final table will kick off at 4 p.m. ET tomorrow and will be live streamed with a 30-minute delay on WPT.com.

Here’s a complete look at the final-table chip counts:

1. Daniel Weinman - 872,000
2. Michael Mizrachi - 699,000
3. Dylan Wilkerson - 641,000
4. Erik Seidel - 540,000
5. David Ormsby - 299,000
6. Daniel Santoro - 250,000

WPT’s Adam Pliska: “We All Need to Hold the Industry Accountable”

Since taking the reins of the World Poker Tour in 2009, Adam Pliska has taken the WPT global, introduced countless new initiatives and helped negotiate a massive $35m-sale to Ourgame International.

In a time where many international poker tours have struggled or been shuttered entirely, the WPT is wrapping up its 15th season.

You could argue the product is more compelling than ever with a season that included long-time host Mike Sexton winning his first WPT and Ema Zajmovic becoming the first female player to win an open event.

The brand has expanded to include a wildly popular low buy-in WPT500 series as well as several social gaming applications.

Pliska, who serves as president of the WPT, is no fly-by-night operator, however, and he has long-term visions for poker that would benefit not just the WPT but the entire community.

PokerListings had the pleasure of catching up with Pliska for an in-depth chat during the WPT’s flagship Tournament of Champions at the Seminole Hard Rock in Florida.

PokerListings.com: How has the WPT been able to stay relevant for for all these years?

Adam Pliska: It starts with the people. We have people who are absolutely committed to pushing the brand forward. I always say one of the greatest parts of running a business with this group is that I have a bunch of very non-defensive people.

Adam Pliska IMG 2675

Adam Pliska and Mike Sexton

You can’t be defensive in our group because we call it the WPT family and we mean it.

Usually people associate that with all the happy parts and the fact that you’re close but we treat each other like we’re a family and we’re very honest. We push each other.

We’re very candid and you can only do that when you trust each other and let your defenses down.

That, I think, is what continues to push us.

We have a system. Everyone can participate. We have a very flat management structure. We don’t hire anyone who’s not important.

We’re always trying to see if we can top the last thing we did.

PL: Obviously it’s been a huge year for Mike Sexton. How important has he been for the WPT family?

Mike Sexton is the spiritual glue for the WPT. Mike Sexton not only a great player, he’s a good man.

Mike Sexton

Mike Sexton in the WPT TOC.

He not only believes in the World Poker Tour, he believes in poker. He believes in what it means. He’s as gracious to someone if it’s their first day playing poker as he is to someone who has won multiple titles.

We’re just so proud to have him. He sets a standard.

I used to work in production for many years so I’ve always worked around celebrities.

When the person who is there at the top sets a standard where you see them out there working hard to promote what we’re trying to do and the spirit of what poker can be… I assure you know one else is going to do a bad job when they have that to look up to.

PL: In your mind what differentiates the WPT from competitors like the WSOP and the PokerStars Championship?

First of all, I want to say that I think each of the major tours contributes something to this industry.

Years ago I used to get questions about whether I minded if the WSOP was playing on TV. I said I didn’t mind at all because it was good quality TV. What I mind is bad quality poker TV.

Adam Pliska IMG 2

Adam Pliska

We all need to promote this market. There was a period where there was bad stuff in the market. Most of it has died off. The good stuff has remained.

I think the WPT’s unique contribution is that we are very heavily narrative-based. We really want to make sure it doesn’t matter where you step on the train… there’s a place for you.

We have the WPT500 series, social gaming for free players, high roller events, the main tour and the DeepStacks.

You don’t have to make the final table. You don’t have to cash. We want to make sure you have a story to tell. That you went to the event, you went to the party, you met some of the crew.

We want to provide the canvas for that story to happen.

PL: How did the Tournament of Champions come to be and what are your plans for the future of the event?

We were doing the WPT Championship, which was an open buy-in event. Everyone who won a tournament on the main tour also got a buy-in.

IMG 2955

The entire 2017 Tournament of Champions field.

What it created was the hardest field in poker and it was very expensive. The numbers were a big issue. To me it was unimpressive. That concerned me a lot.

At the time we were building up the idea of the Champion’s Club and why it was important but there was nothing that only champions got to play. It just seemed incongruent with what we were trying to do.

We made this change — Mike Sexton created the original tournament of champions many years ago — we went back to that concept.

We immediately got criticism that it was a closed event but that happens. When it was an open event no one showed up, when it turned into a closed event then everyone wanted to play.

The [TOC] is great. It attracts great sponsors and it’s a unique opportunity for us. When you play an event like this it reminds you that you are part of a community.

PL: Could you talk for a minute about the WPT500 and the recent explosion of low buy-in poker tournaments?

It’s incredibly exciting.

In the beginning we thought we’d put on this 500 series and it would be another stop where players could get on the train but what’s nice about it is how many pros like to come in and play.

It’s enabled everything we want in poker. We want amateurs. Amateurs are quite often drawn into the game because they saw someone on TV and that player was their hero.

They get to actually play against those players in the WPT500 and they might even win.

I think it’s a terrific experience.

PL: The WPT places a large importance on sponsors. How important are strong sponsors for the WPT and poker in general?

It is very important but it’s also important how those sponsors are integrated.

Back in the early days of the poker boom, we’re talking 14 years ago, people would give you money to put their name on anything related to poker.

C8Rgeu0VwAAR0gF

WPT sponsor Hublot.

I’m not going to point any fingers but some things just didn’t make sense.

We were guilty of that too. Finally one year we just stopped. We felt it wasn’t worth it. We took a year off.

We tried to think about what we were doing wrong. We decided we needed to give the sponsors a lot more information. They need to see that they’re reaching people that actually care about what they do.

Then we thought about why we actually wanted sponsors. Sure there was a financial component but it wasn’t our largest financial component by any means.

There had to be something more. Part of it is because it has a degree of prestige. It gives people the feeling that they are in a true sporting environment.

C8BfeIiVQAEBUGZ.jpg large

First place in the TOC gets one of these.

In the end we decided we weren’t going to take sponsors that didn’t make sense. As soon as we closed those doors we had sponsors coming out of the woodwork.

You have to have the discipline to say, “On a personal level I like your product but we don’t think that’s going to translate to our audience and we don’t think that our audience will be helpful to you.”

These days all of our sponsors get a deep dive and we figure out how we can integrate them. It has to be integrated with the players somehow.

For example Wyndham is giving away vacations, Royal Caribbean gave cruises, Hublot is being generous to contribute to the prize pool, Audi is giving a car… and the players want the car!

Sponsors are important because they help magnify what we’re doing.

PL: What accomplishments are you most proud of since becoming WPT president in 2009?

Number one is that we became global.

Six years ago we had just one event in Europe. I used to joke that we were the “World Poker Stop” instead of the World Poker Tour.

Dominik Nitsche IMG 2864

Dominik Nitsche is one of the many players who benefited from a global WPT.

Now we have 65 events and we’re everywhere. I’m leaving for China next week. We’re in South Africa right now. We’re about to go into Latin America. We’re all over Europe.

The globalization and effective approach of working locally and creating a product organically is a big thing.

Secondly, the WPT survived without becoming on reliant on real-money gaming.

I’m all in favor of legalization of real-money gaming. I want the real-money gaming sites to succeed greatly. But as we know it has been up-and-down, up-and-down for the last 10 years.

That’s why you have poker tours that pop up, sound really good, and then fizzle out after a year.

That happens because a law changes and you think, “Uh oh, pull back the marketing, end the tour.”

At the World Poker Tour we’ve managed a business model that allows us to create a professional league that says, “If it happens: great. If it doesn’t: We can still have a long-term vision.”

Thirdly, on a personal level I’m exceptionally proud of the assemblage of the team. We have a very flat management structure. We are very honest with each other. There is no one at the WPT who is not important. Everyone is absolutely committed.

The respect they show each other. I do not believe that you need to exploit the people who work for you to run a successful company. On the contrary.

PL: You could argue that PokerStars live events have struggled since ditching the EPT brand, do you see an opportunity to acquire potential costumers?

First of all, in regards to PokerStars, when you’ve been around as long as I have, you realize these things go up-and-down.

jasonmercieralpha8

WPT Alpha8 started hot but eventually struggled to draw players.

We once did a $200k buy-in Alpha8 high roller in the Philippines with 50+ entries. Then we went to Florida and had six.

Time has shown me to not be too hasty in those judgements.

What I do think is that the World Poker Tour used to have a parent company [partypoker] that was in the real-money gambling business. Now we don’t.

We only have our social gaming business. Because of that we have an opportunity to fill in holes that other companies are not filling.

We’ll be in Amsterdam shortly. Most of the other online sites don’t have stops there because you can’t do real-money gaming in Amsterdam.

We’ll continue to do that but I’ll put out the red carpet to online gaming sites if they want to work with us. We’ll absolutely do it. We can be agnostic in that way.

I’ll say this about PokerStars. We all have an interest in the promotion of poker.

Lyn Gilmartin WPT

The WPT continues to air around the globe.

I look at how much dollar-value in poker promotion goes out every year and I would say the #1 promotion value comes from PokerStars because they spend the most money.

I would be silly to think that I don’t benefit from them spending money to say, “Poker, poker, poker.”

The second group in that list is the WPT. It’s not because we spend a lot of retail dollars but because we have a TV show that reaches 100 million annually. It just plays over and over again.

Somewhere in the USA, Europe or Latin America there is someone watching the show and they are reminded about how much fun poker can be.

Will 100% of those players come to the WPT? No. Some of them will go play on PokerStars or partypoker or 888. It’s OK.

I don’t want to become shortsighted.

I absolutely know there is a positive effect in doing that. It’s only bad when you get the kind of knockoffs that are not fully committed.

PL: Where is poker headed the next 5-10 years?

For many years people have asked me about the time when we were experiencing the poker boom. I say, “I never stopped seeing the poker boom” because it just kept going all over the place. In Asia or Latin America. It’s just incredible. The magnitude there is even more than it was in the USA.

Brazilian rail

South America remains a tantalizing market.

It’s so exciting to see people lined up outside of poker rooms waiting to play.

It is globalizing. It’s diversifying. We have different levels, we have ClubWPT, we have social gaming. The players on each platform don’t necessarily cross over but that’s OK.

This umbrella, which is poker, is a wide one. We just need to be patient. We don’t need to force everything. We shouldn’t force a social player to play real-money if he/she doesn’t want to.

We also shouldn’t force live tournament players to go to social gaming sites.

We need to be able service a wide group of players. The concern is that you have to keep up standards. I think that’s going to be the issue. Outside of the USA, poker is growing so quickly.

You’re going to see many people coming and saying, “Can I make a quick buck?”

Fortunately we have an investor in OurGame now so that we can have a global company. We have 40 employees in China. We have employees in London and here.

Gus Hansen

Time to find the next Gus Hansen.

We will all need to hold the industry accountable to make sure that the standards stay high because if people start getting bad experiences it can atrophy. We forget that.

We’ve gotta continue to treat the new player in a way that’s respectful and not just look at them like they’re fish.

Social gamers are not all fish. Some of them aren’t out to win, they’re just having fun. What’s the big deal?

In the future we need to continue to think about showing the proper respect and try to fulfill each player’s needs.

The industry puts too much in one basket. That happened with real-money gaming, for instance. That goes the same for social gaming or tournaments. Let’s just take a long-term approach.

If we continue to hit doubles and triples we will serve this community. At the World Poker Tour we’re going to continue to try and hit doubles and triples going to Latin America. We’ll continue to expand social gaming to bring more people into the game.

We’re also going to combine some things with eSports and poker in the future as well.

Every day we’re going to ask ourselves, “What can we do to be better?”

Seidel, Busquet Among 66 Players in WPT TOC, $381k for Winner

A mixture of WPT champions both past and present descended on the Seminole Hard Rock Casino for the 2017 Tournament of Champions on Friday.

Erik Seidel, Eli Elezra, Scott Seiver and Olivier Busquet were among the long-time members of the WPT’s Champion’s Club that put up the $15,000 buy-in to join the rake-free fun and help boost the prize pool to $1,090,000.

Meanwhile every winner from Season XV of the WPT had their buy-in paid for so they all made the trip except for WPT Prague winner Oleg Vasylchenko. The overall field hit 66 players, which marks a very slight increase over last year’s 64.

The winner will walk away with $381k and seat into the 2018 Tournament of Champions.

Nine Places to Pay, 2018 Audi S5 for Winner

The prize pool got a little extra love from title sponsor Monster, which kicked in an extra $100k and a brand-new 2018 Audi S5 for the winner.

WPT500 Heads to LA for First Time Ever, $1m GTD at The Gardens

One of the most popular small buy-in tournaments in the world will make its debut in California this May.

WPT500 Los Angeles will take place May 21-31 at The Gardens Casino and feature a $1m-guaranteed prize pool.

In keeping with WPT500 tournaments, the LA stop will feature 14 starting flights and a thrifty buy-in of $565.

When the field is reduced to 54 players on Day 2 the event will also feature an action clock to speed up play.

The tournament will serve as the Main Event for a larger Gardens Poker Festival with multiple events.

WPT500 Satellites Start at $65

Players who can’t take the $565 hit to play WPT500 can actually qualify for as little as $65 at The Gardens.

The first four starting flights will take place May 21-24, which gives players plenty of time to fire a few bullets in WPT500 and still find time to play the WSOP, which begins in earnest on May 31.

Mike Sexton

California is a new market for the WPT500, which so far has taken place in Las Vegas and Nottingham, England.

“The World Poker Tour couldn’t be happier to partner with The Gardens Casino to bring the WPT500 to California for the very first time,” said Angelica Hael, WPT VP of Global Tour Management.

“The WPT500 is a tremendous addition to the state’s robust and vibrant poker landscape, and Memorial Day Weekend in Los Angeles is the perfect time and place to host this historic event.

“With fantastic onsite amenities, a world-class poker room, and genuine hospitality from The Gardens team, the World Poker Tour is very excited about hosting the first-ever WPT500 in California.”

WPT events represent a massive value in terms of ROI. Last summer Andreas Olympios outlasted a staggering 3,956 entries to win a $260,000 first-place prize at the WPT500 event at Aria.

Monster Headphones Adds $100k to WPT Tournament of Champions

Monster Headphones has stepped up as the title sponsor for the 2017 World Poker Tour Tournament of Champions and will throw an extra $100,000 into the already rake-free prize pool.

The 2017 WPT Tournament of Champions is set to take place April 7-9, 2017, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

The tournament costs $15,000 to buy into but it’s also only open to past WPT champions. In addition every Season XV winner automatically received entry to the flagship tournament.

Adam Pliska: “Monster Raised the Bar”

This is the second straight year Monster has played a large part in the TOC.

Last year Monster chipped in a brand-new 2016 Chevy Corvette for the winner of the inaugural event. Every player at the six-handed final table also received a pair of Monster Soundstage speakers.

Adam Pliska

This year each final-contestant will receive a Monster Superstar Ravebox, a portable speaker. In addition first place will once again get a pair of the Rose Gold wireless Monster headphones.

“Monster has been an extraordinary partner of the World Poker Tour for four seasons, and it is our pleasure that the WPT will close out a historic Season XV with the Monster WPT Tournament of Champions,” said WPT CEO Adam Pliska.

“Head Monster Noel Lee and his outstanding team continue to add significant value to the WPT Champions Club, and they have raised the bar once again through the company’s tremendous contribution of $100,000 in cash to the Monster WPT Tournament of Champions prize pool.”

Last year Farid Yachou took down the first-ever TOC for $381,600 outlasting pros such as Michael Mizrachi, Jonathan Jaffe and Noah Schwartz.

Del Vecchio Clips Mizzi to Win WPT Rolling Thunder for $284k

East Coast grinder Mike Del Vecchio overcame a very tough final table to take down the World Poker Tour’s Rolling Thunder stop for $284k last night.

Del Vecchio outlasted 421 entries and had to out-duel MTT master Sorel Mizzi heads-up to take down his first WPT title.

Mizzi had to settle for a $190,105 consolation prize. The final table also included all-star pros Connor Drinan and Olivier Busquet.

Drinan, Busquet Bust Early

Olivier Busquet and Connor Drinan added some serious star power to the WPT Rolling Thunder final table but it turned out they were only around for a short time.

Olivier Busquet

Olivier Busquet

Drinan doubled up an opponent and then busted sixth in a three-way hand against Busquet and John Hadley.

Busquet tripled up in the hand but would eventually fall in fifth place when his A-8 wasn’t able to hold against Steven Tabb’s K-4.

From there Del Vecchio started to bring the heat and by the time heads-up play began he had developed a nearly 2-1 chip lead against Sorel Mizzi.

Mizzi battled back to even but eventually fell when Del Vecchio turned trip fours against a massive Mizzi draw.

The trip fours held and Del Vecchio secured the title and a spot in the WPT Tournament of Champions.

WPT Rolling Thunder completes the so-called “California Swing” that also includes the LAPC and Bay 101 stops.

Next up for the WPT is a trip to Florida for the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown on March 31.

Here’s a complete look at the payouts from the WPT Rolling Thunder final table:

1st: Mike Del Vecchio – $284,638
2nd: Sorel Mizzi – $190,105
3rd: Steve Tabb – $122,296
4th: John Hadley – $81,930
5th: Olivier Busquet – $63,013
6th: Connor Drinan – $52,222

Sexton in the Hunt for 2nd WPT Title at 2017 LAPC Final Table

The long-time WPT announcer is the second-shortest stack heading into the six-player L.A. Poker Classic final table but he still has 39 big blinds to work with.

He’s have to contend with a rampaging Daniel Strelitz who amassed 6.4 million chips and will enter the final table as the overwhelming chip leader.

First place in this year’s LAPC will tip the scales at $1.001 million.

Dunst Subs as Commentator

Strelitz isn’t the only player that Sexton will have to keep an eye on as East Coast grinder Jesse Martin will be looking to make some noise with 2.5m chips.

Tony Dunst

Tony Dunst

The rest of the final table is made up of Californian Jared Griener (1.8m chips), Bulgarian Simeon Naydenov (2.8m) and New Yorker Richard Tuhrim (680,000)

Tony Dunst will once again take Sexton’s spot in the commentary booth with Vince Van Patten for the televised final table.

It certainly worked out for Sexton last time around. Dunst filled in for Sexton when the partypoker ambassador won WPT Montreal in November.

Despite his $6.1+ million in earnings (and 14 years of commentating) Sexton only has one WPT title, which he earned in November. He will be able to make that two if the cards go his way tonight.

The 2017 LAPC final table will kick off at 4 p.m. PT today. There is no live stream but you can follow the WPT live updates.

Here’s a look at the chip counts heading into the final table:

1. Daniel Strelitz – 6,485,000 (216 bb)
2. Simeon Naydenov – 2,860,000 (95 bb)
3. Jesse Martin – 2,540,000 (85 bb)
4. Jared Griener – 1,895,000 (63 bb)
5. Mike Sexton – 1,165,000 (39 bb)
6. Richard Tuhrim – 680,000 (23 bb)

WPT to Start Season XVI with Special Beijing Event

The World Poker Tour is going to shake things up in Season XVI by kicking things off with a special event in Beijing from April 15-19.

The WPT Beijing stop will be held in conjunction with the 2017 Ourgame Chess & Card Festival held at the Nuo Hotel.

The Beijing Main Event will have a cap of 400 players with a mixture of international players and domestic players who will be able to qualify through the Ourgame Card Festival.

This is the second time that the WPT has ventured into China as WPT National Sanya has taken place every year for the last five years.

First WPT Main Event in China

This is the first time the WPT has held a Main Event and the company’s CEO Adam Pliska said it was only natural to expand into Asia at this point.

AdamPliska 300x375

“The World Poker Tour is proud to kick off Season XVI with WPT Beijing and add a second major poker tournament to the burgeoning Chinese region,” said Pliska.

“It is without question that Asia has an ever-increasing demand for major poker events, as evidenced by WPT National Sanya selling out each of its first five years.

“Alongside our parent company Ourgame, the WPT looks forward to hosting the best players from the region and around the world as we kick off Season XVI with WPT Beijing.”

There will plenty of games available during the Ourgame Chess & Card Festival beyond poker including bridge, mahjong and more.

Of course the current WPT season will conclude with the Tournament of Champions at Seminole Hard Rock Casino on April 7.
