In today’s Daily 3-Bet we’ll take a look at a clever Chinese poker hack, Mike McDonald’s poor PLO skills and Phil Hellmuth finally getting the best of Mike Matusow.
1) Chinese Skirt Laws with Apps
For years the online poker industry’s white whale has been the Asian poker boom. Operators were licking their chops at the prospective market but now it may be happening without their help.
HighStakesDB posted an eye-opening report this week about how Chinese poker players are using free-to-play apps to facilitate private real-money games. Here’s how it works:
Free-to-play social poker apps in China give players the ability to create their own home games. You can then invite your friends/acquaintances to your group or club.
For real-money games an independent agent starts a club and is then responsible for taking and holding players funds.
Players then settle their debts using direct bank transfers with no credit cards involved. The agents usually take a 5% fee from winning players who cash out.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about this approach? It could absolutely work in the United States.
Now it might not be a great idea to trust an individual to hold all the money for such games (or the software on crappy, free-to-play apps) but it conceivably would work. Fascinating stuff.
2) Mike McDonald’s Mom Burns his PLO Skills
Mike “Timex” McDonald is unequivocally one of the best No-Limit Hold’em MTT players in the world. You’ll see evidence of that on his excellent new Twitch poker channel.
He’ll readily admit, however, that his Pot-Limit Omaha game could use some work. Regardless he plays PLO on Twitch sometimes to improve his game and entertain his fans.
His mom thinks he should just stick to NLHE according to this rather savage Tweet:
“You’re doing a great job streaming. But I’ve got one piece of constructive criticism- stick to Hold’em. You’re no good at PLO” Thanks Mom

3) Hellmuth Tops Matusow in LAPC Side Event
Ready for an old-school throwback?
The WPT LAPC $1,100 Omaha/Stud Hi-Low final table featured Phil “Poker Brat” Hellmuth, Mike “The Mouth” Matusow and “Miami” John Cernuto last night.
Cernuto busted in ninth but Hellmuth and Matusow went the distance eventually facing off in heads-up play.
This isn’t the first time Matusow and Hellmuth have met in a high-profile heads-up match as Matusow beat the Poker Brat in the 2013 NBC National Heads-Up Championship for $750,000.
The stakes weren’t quite as high this time around but Hellmuth got a little bit of revenge finally beating his close friend.
Hellmuth took home $25,000 for the win after everything was done and said.
Just a drop in the bucket, really, compared to his $21m lifetime live tournament earnings.
