It’s been quite some time since since PokerStars signed a straight-up poker pro but that changed today with the addition of Russian-born high roller Igor Kurganov.
Kurganov likely needs no introduction to poker fans as he’s been one of the most successful high-stakes pros with $12m in earnings in a little over six years.
He’s also dating fellow Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree and a member of her Global Poker League team.
REG Champion, High Roller Crusher
Despite his considerable poker success, Igor Kurganov might be better known for founding REG (Raising for Effective Giving) along with Philipp Gruissem and Liv Boeree.
Arguably the most prolific charity in the history of poker, REG has raised millions for various causes based on cost-effectiveness.
Over the last few years PokerStars has concentrated heavily on athletes instead of poker pros with Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar Jr. and Rafael Nadal representing the brand.
PokerStars also loaded up on Twitch.tv stars with Jason “Jcarver” Somerville, Jaime “PokerStaples” Staples and Kevin Martin.
Kurganov doesn’t really fit in either of those categories but is considered one of the best high-stakes players in the world and one of the sharpest minds. He’s also the top earning Russian of all time.
Despite very few outright tournament wins, Kurganov always seems to find a way to the final table of super high roller events.
In 2013 he pulled off a particularly impressive feat by making every high roller final table at the Aussie Millions including the $25k buy-in, $100k buy-in and $250k buy-in for a nearly $1.5m haul.
