Snap chat: Mickey Petersen talks WCOOP and great Danes

PokerPlayer: You travel the circuit a lot. Where are you at the moment?
Mickey Petersen: I’ve just got back from Cyprus and I’ve been playing the WCOOP.

Does WCOOP compare to the WSOP for you?
I think it’s silly to compare the two. But yeah it’s a big deal and WCOOP and SCOOP are my favourite poker weeks of any year.

Does a $10k online generally have a tougher field than live?
In terms of skill level a $10k online is much closer to a Super High Roller in toughness than a live $10k, for sure.

‘Mement_Mori’ is a cool username. How did you come up with that?
It’s from the Latin phrase ‘Memento Mori’ which is ‘remember you are mortal’ or ‘remember you will die’. Think it fits tournaments well.

What’s your favourite thing to do outside of poker?
I’m pretty simple. All I need to be happy is friends, eating lots of chicken, spending time outside, staying healthy and reading books.

You go to some pretty cool places – which city do you hate?
It’s probably not the city’s fault, but Deauville.

Why Deauville?
I  missed the last train so had to take a three hour cab with a guy who spoke no English and would get out of the car and start swearing in French
in the middle of the road. I thought he might kill me.

You’re always grinding live or online. How do you stay so motivated?

  1. Looking at how much better than me the people at the top are
  2. I enjoy playing poker
  3. It’s a job and it’s important I treat it that way

Is there one player in poker you look up to?
All the guys who are at the top of the food chain and have been for a while. Ike [Haxton], Doug Polk and Ben Sulsky.

As a Dane, who is cooler – Gus Hansen or Theo Jorgensen?
That’s a close one! They are both great, but I think Theo narrowly wins because he writes the funniest blogs.

Finally, you won the English Poker Open in 2012. Did you get to meet the Queen?
Unfortunately not, which is disappointing as I would have loved a cup of tea!
