Woop-woop, that’s the sound of the WCOOP!

PokerStars guarantees a staggering $40m across 66 world championship events this September – and you can watch the $10m finale!

The live version of poker’s world championships might be over for another year (bar the trifling matter of deciding which of the lucky nine players is winning the $10m), but PokerStars is back with a new World Championship of Online Poker schedule, with over $40m up for grabs across 22 days and 66 events.

You might not know this but the WCOOP has been running for 13 years now – the first one was way back in 2002 and over $350m has been given away so far. It’s never got the sort of attention the WSOP does because unless you’re taking part it’s hard to rail or get excited, despite big-name players like JC Tran and Yevgeniy Timoshenko boasting main event victories. That’s all set to change this year as PokerStars has announced that the $10m guaranteed main event final table will feature a webcast for the first time.

TV times

We’ve long enjoyed the EPT-casts, complete with commentary from the fantastic Stapes and Hartigan, and we can’t wait for the WCOOP to get the same treatment. PokerStars promises, ‘an enhanced viewing experience… with the commentary team of EPT Live regulars James Hartigan and Joe Stapleton, plus members of Team PokerStars, bringing a new dimension to the action.

WCOOP is renowned for the vast array of games, tournaments and formats that it comprises, and this year is no exception. The opening day sees three Sunday Major special editions – including a 6 six-max version of the Sunday Warm-Up.

In addition there are also six Progressive Super Knockout events, plus a host of other formats like Ante Up, Big Antes, 4-Max, 6-Max, Shootouts and more. Games include Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo, Draw, Stud, Razz and many more.

The Protégé

For the first time at a WCOOP, PokerStars is running a side promotion that will see four protégés win training from Team PokerStars Pros (Andre Akkari, Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, Eugene Katchalov and Vanessa Selbst), and receive buy-ins to three events, including the $5,200 Main Event. The public vote to see who gets chosen to become the four protégés will begin on August 15. Check out the PokerStars.net Facebook page from August 15 for more information and how to vote.
